About NIOS

As an effort to raise the literacy rate in India, Government of India, Ministry of HRD (Human Resource Development established a autonomous educational organization NIOS (National Institute of open Schooling) in 1989. NIOS is running nationwide along with its various centers with the sole aim of imparting quality and necessary education to all irrespective of any caste, creed, gender, religion or any other basis.

NIOS is specialized in offering various courses like Vocational courses, Life Enrichment Course as well as Community oriented courses along with basic Secondary and Senior Secondary level courses. Moreover, it also provides the opportunity to failed 10th and 12th students in clearing or passing the exams without wasting a year.

Courses Offered:

Secondary Level Courses:

The secondary level courses offered by NIOS are equivalent to tenth standard courses in other boards like BSE, ICSE and state Boards. To clear secondary level you need to pass in five subjects with one language subject in it. Along with this students who are willing can opt for two extra courses too. So, students can choose subjects according to their future career prospects.

Courses In Group A – Hindi, English, Bengali, Nepali, Gujarati, Urdu, Kannada, Assamese, Telugu, Punjabi, Malayalam, Arabic, Tamil, Persian and Sanskrit.

Courses In Group B – Mathematics, Science, Social, Economics, Business Studies, Home Science, Psychology, Culture and Heritage, Painting and Word Processing.

Senior Secondary Level Courses:

It is equivalent to 12th standard and can be opted by those only who have cleared secondary level. It also offers wide variety of subjects like Hindi, Sanskrit, English and Urdu, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Geography, Biology, Political Science, Word Processing, Commerce, Accountancy, Computer Science, Psychology, Sociology, Mass Communication, Painting, Home Science, and History.

Vocational Courses:

NIOS also offers various vocational courses through which students can earn while they learn especially designed for students who have weaker financial conditions and need money for heir livelihood.Some of the vocational courses offered are Retail, Cutting and Tailoring, Dress making, Air Conditioning, Beauty Culture, TV Repairing, Certificate in Security Software and many more.

Open Basic Education (OBE):

NIOS also offer elementary education programme managed in three levels. This programme is specially designed for school dropouts and neo-literates.

OBE level A : equivalent to class I-III

OBE level B : equivalent to class IV-V

OBE level C : equivalent to class VI-VIII
